Wheat Pete’s Word, Feb 5: Cross-border stress, stripe rust alert, snow mould, and crop shares

by

Snow mould, and stripe rust, and land rents, oh my!

How on earth could there be so many disease alerts this early in the season? Well, Peter “Wheat Pete” Johnson would tell you forewarned is forearmed, and both stripe rust and snow mould could be an issue in this upcoming growing season.

Also on this week’s episode of Wheat Pete’s Word, Johnson talks land rents and crop shares, wheat midge risk, clover choices, and more!

SUMMARY

  • In-person interactions are really important for our mental health
  • Welcome back, sun! We’re adding minutes per day. We did it
  • In March we gain almost 3 minutes per day of sunlight
  • But, that doesn’t mean it’s warm. Winter has been colder than average for many areas, including Ontario and parts of Western Canada, too
  • The snow load is feast or famine. Lake effect snow hammered Bruce and Grey Counties
  • People will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you make them feel
  • Pete got to host The Agronomists on Monday! Check it out here
  • Lots of learning from YEN
  • Let’s talk crops!
  • More crop sharing agreements happening? Possibly, and perhaps they are evolving. Landowner 50 per cent of the yield, but the farmer pays all the bills
  • Still cheaper than paying the mortgage on the land….
  • 2025 could be a stripe rust year. Be alert early. Scout often and act fast
  • Midge risk maps are up too. For both, choose the right varieties
  • Snow mould risk? Big canopy under the snow is a risk
  • We have better seed treatments, however snow rot may be a bigger risk. Ponding and excessive wet could be an issue
  • Winter barley are more susceptible
  • Ground still thawed under the snow? That could be a good thing
  • Early demand for S on wheat
  • Don’t rush the first N application on wheat in a more average spring
  • Manage lodging risk
  • Buckwheat “liberating” phosphorus? Weed suppression is a benefit, but it can also be a weed
  • Alfalfa increases the risk of root and crown diseases in subsequent crops, so does phacelia
  • Sweet clover vs red clover in wheat
