Winter is a great time to level-up farm safety training, says AgSafe Alberta

Farm safety is often overlooked in the hectic pace of daily chores, making training and emergency plans critically important. That’s why winter can be a great time to focus on safety, says Jody Wacowich, executive director of AgSafe Alberta.

Courses such as FARMERS CARE, respiratory protective equipment (RPE), and confined space awareness are all available through AgSafe Alberta, says Wacowich in this interview recorded at Crossroads Crop Conference in Edmonton, Alta. With each course completed, producers are also entered into a draw to win a $100 UFA gift card.

The non-profit is also offering courses that would normally have a cost associated, such as WHMIS, for free until the end of March. Both are required under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code.

When asked about feedback that AgSafe Alberta has been hearing back from producers, Wacowich says, “on our FARMERS CARE program… it was much easier and shorter than they expected and that was really the goal in trying to make safety very simple.”
