Beef Market Update: Markets are “incredible” and “on-fire,” says Anne Wasko

by

“Incredible” and “on-fire” are just a couple of descriptors that Anne Wasko of Gateway Livestock Exchange uses to describe the markets in this episode of Beef Market Update.

When it comes to the U.S., new records continue to be set and Wasko says that a ‘pile of cattle’ were traded last week. This week started slow, but trade is expected to remain steady with last week’s numbers. Depending on the category, the futures market has also reached record highs.

As for the Alberta fat cattle market, it has been working hard to keep up with the Joneses, says Wasko, with dressed prices coming in at 5 dollars, 100 higher and live trade coming in a little over average. Even with the higher prices and demand however, Wasko remarks that the basis on fat cattle in western Canada is still very weak.

Feeder cattle are also hitting record highs, auction volumes are strong, and choice box beef prices have set new records for March. Plus, there’s a fresh perspective on acquiring pairs — all that and plenty more is up for discussion in this episode!
