Farmer calls for action — not handouts and loans — in the face of tariffs on canola

by

“It’s literally costing me money now to seed canola… $200,000 that…[we] lost off of our canola, just like that, just due to the tariffs.”

This is the message that Christi Friesen of Rebellion Farms based out of Brownvale, Alta., wanted to get across to Premiere Danielle Smith in a recent post on X (see below). She says that while she appreciates Smith’s willingness to stand up for Albertans and the industries in the province, Friesen believes that farmers in Alberta need to know that they’re being heard, and that’s step 1.

In this interview with RealAgriculture’s Amber Bell, Friesen discusses the importance of the canola industry, not just in Alberta, but also throughout Canada, and how big of an impact the tariffs are having on the farmers that are looking at seeding canola this year. They also discuss possible solutions and Friesen’s intent behind her X post that listed out the economical impact that these tariffs will have on her family’s livelihood.

“We don’t want another loan. We don’t want handouts,” Friesen says, “it would be nice to see some backing from the provincial government and from the federal government. And it would be nice to see… some actions in that regard.”
