Tough broadleaf weeds will soon have a new archenemy with the launch of Huskie™ PRE herbicide into the Western Canadian cereal market. This first Group 27 cereal pre-burn herbicide is a potent addition to tank-mixes like
Roundup Transorb® HC herbicide for powerful, fast-acting, early-season control of tough broadleaf weeds, including resistant species.

“Huskie PRE can become the cornerstone of an integrated weed management strategy,” Ashley Smith, Marketing Portfolio Lead for Bayer points out. “Bayer’s looking to support growers and retailers on what they’re doing now and how that can affect their crop rotation in the next year,” she adds. “That’s because what you do this year to control weeds in your cereals will help your canola or pulse rotation the next year be that much more effective.”

New Huskie PRE promises to be the key to that longer term planning. “We designed the product to be a specialist for pre-burn applications,” Smith explains. “We didn’t formulate it with a crop safener and the adjuvants within it are very aggressive. That’s because it’s designed for targeting early season germinating weeds so that it’s as effective as possible.” Remember that those tough early season weeds can compete for water, nutrients and light before your crop even gets seeded.

A mix of bromoxynil (Group 6) and pyrasulfotole (Group 27), Huskie PRE is especially effective against resistant kochia, thanks to the bromoxynil in the product. In fact, applying Huskie PRE + Roundup WeatherMAX® pre-burn has been shown to improve uptake of in-crop applications of bromoxynil. Field trials showed 97% kochia control 14 days after using Huskie PRE + Roundup WeatherMAX followed by an in-crop application of Varro® FX + Buctril® M. That same tank mix without the Huskie PRE + Roundup WeatherMAXpre-burn scored only about 68% kochia control.*

“We see Huskie PRE as a solution for growers who are struggling with their pre-burn to enable effective in-crop applications,” Smith adds. “The key is to control weeds early so that when you get later germinating flushes, they’re the optimal size for effective in-crop application.”

With Huskie PRE in a pre-burn treatment, you’ll be seeding cereals into a clean field. Applied at 0.4 litres per acre, Huskie PRE is available in 405 litre totes as well as 8.1 litre jugs and 129.6 litre drums. In a Roundup Transorb HC tank mix, fast-acting Huskie PRE will also control volunteer canola and other broadleaf weed including Groups 2, 4, 5, 9, and 14 biotypes.

Bayer’s Ashley Smith says the introduction of Huskie PRE is part of an overall strategy to support growers and retailers in their short- and long-term integrated weed management strategy. “In Western Canada, weed resistance management is at the forefront of what we’re focusing on today,” Smith confirms. “By bringing Huskie PRE to market, we’re addressing some of the toughest-to-control resistant species out there today. There aren’t always new molecules coming down the pipeline so a blended product like Huskie PRE makes perfect sense.”

“A pre-burn application in cereals can be a valuable tool for growers to integrate into their practice,” Smith adds. “Adding that Group 27 mode of action helps to control those tough weeds to enable the success of your in-crop application. Bayer wants to ensure that what we do today provides a sustainable solution for your cropping operation.”
