The unknown and uncertainty of trade tariffs is worse than the tariffs themselves says Todd Hirsch of Todd Hirsch Consulting, which is why the past two weeks has been so difficult to navigate.
In this discussion from Crops Convention at Edmonton, Alta., Hirsch and Shaun Haney discuss several economic factors at play, including:
- The role of tariffs in trade disruption
- Canada’s response to the U.S.
- The cost of retaliatory tariffs to Canada
- The time it takes to set other productivity efforts in motion
Hirsch says that one of the challenges to this entire situation is that economic decisions and political decisions are often at odds with each other, and politicians — be they presidents, premiers, or prime ministers — have to strike a balance between being seen as taking action without inflicting to much hurt.
