On March 27, RealAgriculture and the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute (CAPI) hosted a webinar to discuss the future of the Canada-U.S. trade relationship, as the Trump administration’s trade agenda has become the prevailing issue in the Canadian election campaign.
The webinar started with Shaun Haney getting a firmer understanding of the White House’s strategy in discussion with Oliver Ward, Washington-based trade editor at Agri-Pulse. Ward shared his insight into what the Trump administration is attempting to accomplish with its threats of multiple layers of tariffs on allies and enemies alike.
Tyler McCann, managing director of CAPI, then led a panel discussion with three very knowledgeable panelists with strong Canadian and American trade experiences:
– Ambassador Gregg Doud, CEO of the National Milk Producers Federation and former chief agriculture negotiator for the U.S. Trade Representative during Trump’s first term;
– Travis Toews, former Alberta finance minister and former president of the Canadian Cattle Association;
– Tyler Bjornson, principal and founder of T. Bjornson and Associates Consulting, based in Ottawa.
At the end of the webinar, the whole crew engaged in a very thoughtful discussion on the next steps and what the Canada-U.S. relationship could look like in the future.
