With the Canadian Grocery Sector Code of Conduct complete, attention now turns to the implementation and education around what the code will and won’t provide for industry players.
The code was finalized last year and will come into force in June 2025. That means there needs to be a body that overseas the code and its enforcement — so the Office of the Grocery Sector Code of Conduct was formed.
Karen Proud has been named the inaugural president and adjudicator for the Office, and will oversee the roll out of the code, the education and adjustment period for grocery retailers and supplies, and, eventually, the enforcement of the code.
Proud outlines that the code will allow for more transparency in the grocery value chain, a mechanism for dispute resolution, and fairness between both large and small players.
What it won’t likely do, or isn’t directly designed to do, is lower food prices — something that was a point of discussion in the lead up to the code being adopted by the sector.
