Beef Market Update: A turbulent week in U.S. markets, currency, and carcass weights

by

Cattle markets in the U.S. mirrored the volatility seen across equity, bond, and currency markets this week.

U.S. markets seesawed this week — falling early, rebounding mid-week, then sliding again by Friday, as Anne Wasko of Gateway Livestock Exchange tells RealAgriculture’s Shaun Haney in this episode of Beef Market Update. Canadian markets, however, have held together pretty well in Wasko’s opinion.

Diving into the actual numbers, Wasko reports that the dressed cutout wholesale price in the U.S. is down 4 dollars, the choice cutout closed at $334.30 and the select spread is still back about 19 dollars. Meanwhile, in Alberta the local market picked up 5 dollars dressed.

Wasko and Haney also discuss carcass weights, newly released export and import data for the first quarter of 2025, navigating decisions based on tariffs, and the effect of a change in the Canadian dollar on cattle prices in this episode.
