Nuffield Canada scholarship a “rocket ship” for networking and connection

by

For 75 years, Nuffield Canada has awarded international travel scholarships to curious and open-minded individuals in agriculture, empowering them to explore innovations, policies, and practices around the world and bring transformative ideas back to Canada.

The organization annually awards a handful of chosen applicants with $20,000 bursaries in order to bring new perspectives and ideas back to Canadian agriculture, says Steve Larocque, chairman of Nuffield Canada, in this interview with RealAgriculture’s Shaun Haney. These ideas are then often implemented by the scholars within their own businesses, farms, and communities.

When it comes to who the ideal Nuffield scholar is, Larocque says that anyone between the ages of 25- to 50-years old who is curious, open-minded and generous with their time is a potential candidate. Farmers, agri-business owners, people that support the ag network, are in fishing, forestry, or fibre, should all apply, states Larocque. “People who are generally curious and want to learn something new and hungry for information [should apply],” he says.

The program opened for applications April 1 and will be closing June 30. A top 10 list will subsequently be put together with formal interviews being held in July. Recipients will be announced in September, says Larocque. As for how to apply, he says that the application is only two pages and can be found online at Nuffield.ca.

“This is just a rocket ship for connection and community and bringing a lot of open-minded people together,” he says.
