Ruminating with RealAg, Ep 21: Lessons in managing dewormer resistance

by

There is nothing quite like having the exact right tool at the exact right time to get a job done. Many ranchers out on pasture have experienced the importance of that moment when they are looking for their favourite hammer or nut driver, only to realize that it’s missing from the toolbox, lost to the tangle of grasslands.

Parasitical resistance to dewormers is a lot like that moment — just when you need a reliable tool, it’s no longer effective or even there. And when it comes to managing internal parasites in cattle, losing that ‘tool’ can cost time, money, and herd health.

A new University of Missouri study shows how gastrointestinal worms are becoming increasingly resistant to commonly used dewormers. To discuss the research findings, the parasitic life cycle, and how producers can manage resistance through grazing and product rotation, Ruminating with RealAg host Amber Bell is joined by Eric Meusch, livestock specialist for Missouri University Extension.
