Ruminating with RealAg, Ep 22: Getting to the root of out-competing weeds in forage

by

Spring is an exciting — and busy — time of year. For some ranchers calving is just coming to a close; for others it may be just starting. There are fences to fix, water systems to install and repair, grazing plans to finalize and cattle to run through the squeeze. Often in the hectic pace of spring, weeds are one of the last things on a producer’s mind.

In this episode of Ruminating with RealAg, Grant Lastiwka of Renovo Seeds joins host Amber Bell to discuss not only the importance of weed management in pastures for profitability, but also how different management decisions impact forage quality and how to best control hard-to-handle weeds like Canada thistle, tansy and burdock.

“We’ve always said to people that the best weed control is a competitive crop. And the idea of a competitive crop in the grain world is understood…. a competitive crop in the grazing world needs to also be understood,” says Lastiwka. “The weeds appear for many reasons. The reality of them is they are so often a symptom of a problem versus the problem itself.”

So grab your favourite drink, a comfy chair, and settle in for the great conversation below as Lastiwka and Bell discuss how to address the problem of weeds! Or subscribe to this podcast on your favourite audio platform!
