A recipe for sustainable sclerotinia management

Sclerotinia can be a serious threat to your crop. To sustainably manage sclerotinia, the key decision every canola grower must make each year is whether to spray – and when.

Sure, moist and hot conditions contribute to a sclerotinia outbreak. But even in a dry year, your risk of infection can still be significant, especially in fields where the fungus has broken out in the past. Those fields that have a history of sclerotinia need to be more proactively protected with a fungicide.

With sclerotinia as an ever-present threat to your crop, it’s important to consider how to build a sustainable sclerotinia management program, one that will minimize the threat without jeopardizing the efficacy of your chosen fungicide. The key to sustainable management is being able to accurately anticipate when and where you need to spray.

FieldView can help manage the risk of yield-robbing sclerotinia

The FieldView™ digital farming platform can help determine the risk of an impending sclerotinia outbreak and deliver that information to your smartphone, thanks to the platform’s predictive disease management function. Canola growers no longer need to keep checking the forecast to determine optimal fungicide application timing.

The FieldView platform includes a suite of script creation tools, which can help create crop protection fungicide prescriptions based on satellite imagery. These prescriptions can help ensure the fungicides are applied on the areas of the field that most warrant that application.

Introducing the Canola Fungicide Digital Pilot

Bayer Canada has launched the Canola Fungicide Digital Pilot for FieldView subscribers. By participating in the program, canola growers can support the refinement of FieldView’s predictive disease management offer while benefiting from the platform’s predictive insights. Participants will receive field-by-field insights that will help them address the three main questions every canola grower has regarding sclerotinia management: Should I spray? When should I spray? and Where should I spray?

Reach your canola potential – with Proline GOLD

With the help of FieldView’s insights, a farmer can confidently decide to spray. Bayer has made the “What should I spray” decision easy with Proline® GOLD fungicide. Proline GOLD includes two active ingredients for exceptional fungal protection. Prothioconazole (Group 3) delivers steady and sustainable efficacy. The second active ingredient, fluopyram (Group 7), delivers fast and long-lasting protection, even at distal parts of the plant. This active ingredient provides excellent protection – even in high pressure disease situations. Fluopyram is highly mobile within the plant and delivers residual protection. Since this active has three unique sites of activity, it can still be effective where other Group 7 fungicide resistance situations have been identified. Fluopyram also delivers a bonus benefit by contributing to physiological and greening reaction in the plant for improved light energy harvesting.

With FieldView and Proline GOLD in your toolbox, you’ll know when and where to spray and what product delivers the best results. You won’t spray any more than required. That’s what sustainable sclerotinia management is all about.

Sign up for the Canola Fungicide Digital Pilot Program

Farmers who participate in this pilot will receive weekly notifications that include their predicted sclerotinia risk at 30% bloom and predicted crop growth stage. Participants may also be eligible for a $1/acre rebate on their Proline GOLD purchase.

FieldView and Proline GOLD represent the next step in sustainable sclerotinia management. For more information about participating in the new Canola Fungicide Digital Pilot program, talk to your local Bayer representative or call 403-472-1568.
