Beef Market Update: Weather and cattle prices getting steamy

by

It is getting hot out there, and the thermometer isn’t the only thing that has been going up — cattle markets continue to sizzle.

In this episode of the Beef Market Update, Anne Wasko of Gateway Livestock Exchange tells RealAgriculture’s Shaun Haney that once again the markets are reaching new high price territory.

Prices in the southern U.S. climbed another $3 this week, with Nebraska seeing gains of $3 to $5, leaving Wasko to question whether or not we’re starting to see the top of these markets.

Alberta’s market stayed red-hot, too. “The fat cattle market on a dress basis here this week was up three bucks… 490 to 493 delivered,” Wasko says. With lighter Canadian calf-fed weights showing up in the data, overall tonnage remains well below 2024. “Fed cattle production in Canada is actually down 10%.”

As for live cattle exports, quarter one data has come in from StatsCan. As Wasko puts it, ‘basically everything’ went south. Fat cattle exports were up 32 per cent and feeder cattle headed south were up 163 per cent from the same time frame last year.

Wasko and Haney also discuss the potential implications for feeder cattle imports, the outlook for on-feed numbers, and the possibility that pens may sit empty later this year.
