Making high-quality milk and milk replacer easily available to calves is a key to future production for dairy farmers.
“Calves are the most important and the best investment for the future, because they end up as a dairy cow,” says Manuel Schieritz, sales director for Urban, the Germany-based calf feeding mixer manufacturer.
The company was founded by Helmut Urban in 1984 and has been working for four decades to develop a holistic approach to the health of calves, lambs and kids that includes innovative solutions to reduce daily workload and optimize calf heath.
In this report from the Canadian Dairy XPO at Stratford, Ont., Schieritz and RealAgriculture’s Bernard Tobin take a look at two products designed to deliver greater calf health and feeding efficiency.
Alma Pro is a fully automatic feeding system that prepares milk and feeds the calf warm, fresh milk on demand. It’s much like nature where calves can go to the mother and suck on their udder. “The machine prepares fresh milk and the calf has the opportunity to get four or five smaller portions,” says Schieritz.
The mobile Urban MilkShuttle liquid calf feeder is available in five different sizes ranging from 100 to 350 litres. The three-wheel design is built to navigate all manners of terrain and features an automatic stop function and an extremely small turning radius. It feeds both whole milk and milk replacer and features multiple preparation settings. A slow-speed setting helps to gently warm up whole milk while also preventing it from burning, while a faster speed setting is suitable for optimally preparing clump-free milk powder.
