The evolution of dairy freestall housing

by

Managing dairy cows in freestyle housing has changed significantly over the decades as stabling systems have evolved to optimize cow comfort and milk production.

Torenna freestalls vice president Austin Nyenhuis says cow comfort is a key focus in how his company is working to advance freestall systems. In this report from the Canadian Dairy XPO in Stratford, Ont., he highlights the importance of adjustability in stall configurations and how it allows for different age groups and pen arrangements.

Nyenhuis also emphasizes how cow comfort impacts all aspects of stall production — from configuration to materials used — to construct flexible stalls that prevent cows from contacting rigid surfaces to enhance milk production.

With business operations based in Mitchell, Ont., Torenna features a cow-friendly freestall divider system made of heavy duty polymer piping, which increases longevity without compromising on strength, says Nyenhuis. Stalls utilize a a single rail stall configuration with a patented floating neck rail for flexibility.

The company also offers feed fronts for various animals, including llamas and beef as well as mounting solutions for new and existing stalls.
