One of the things I love about Canada is our language. We have officially bilingual provinces, two official languages, we have Prairie-isms (ask me what a dainty tray is!) and regional dialects (hellllooo, Newfoundland).
I’ve lived in four provinces, but I grew up in Manitoba. The differences between provinces’ language can sometimes be subtle, like a hydro vs power bill, or stark, like a bunnyhug vs a hoodie.
It’s always fascinating to me to learn how language changes as you move east to west or south to north. For example, what do you call it when you step in a deep puddle and your footwear gets wet? In Manitoba, that’s a booter. In Ontario, it’s a soaker.
Since moving to Ontario, I’ve noticed that many people here call this weekend the May 2-4 weekend, but I grew up calling it May Long, the official start of camping season, FYI.
So, I want to know? What’s this weekend called?
