Saskatchewan Pulse Growers to lower levy as of August 1

by

Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG) will reduce its levy rate on pulse and soybean crops from 0.67 per cent to 0.60 per cent, effective August 1, 2025.

The change, approved by the Agri-Food Council, comes after several years of steady pulse acreage and strong prices that have led to levy revenues consistently exceeding SPG’s spending. The organization says the adjustment is aimed at better aligning revenues with planned expenditures, while gradually drawing down its surplus of unrestricted net assets.

“SPG acknowledges stable pulse acres and consistently strong pulse prices, which has led to SPG revenues exceeding expenses over the last number of years,” says SPG board chair Winston van Staveren. “SPG is in a strong financial position and the Board is taking the responsible decision to reduce the levy rate and keep more money in the pockets of growers.”

SPG collects the levy at the first point of sale, based on a percentage of gross sales. The lower rate is expected to reduce annual levy revenue by roughly $1.5 million.

“SPG is financially secure, holding a fully-funded revenue variability reserve designed to sustain the organization through potential periods of downturns in revenue,” says SPG executive director Carl Potts. “We will continue to make strategically important investments in programs to support farmers and increase their profitability."

The new rate will apply to all sales starting August 1, coinciding with the start of the crop year. SPG is working with buyers to update collection systems. Growers who are charged the previous rate after the change takes effect are encouraged to contact SPG for a refund.
