Corn School: Herbicide Decisions Following a Frost

by

An nasty cold weekend has left many corn and wheat fields looking just a little sad over a huge area of southern Ontario. According to wheat specialist, Peter Johnson, wheat still in the boot should be fine, but fields with heads emerged could see some yield damage. Similarly, the staging of the corn crop at this point should also mean little damage.

As Rob Miller, with BASF, explains in this video, the growing point is still protected from light frost at this point. The newest leaves, however, are most vulnerable, so many farmers are seeing browning and yellowing of these. Miller explains why the corn crop should recover just fine, but cautions against heading to the field too soon with a herbicide application — both to protect the crop and to be most effective against weeds.
