The 2012 drought that hit Ontario producers hard, hit Indiana farmers even harder. So hard in fact that it was one of the worst yielding crop years on record. That number being relative to what’s expected given technology and management practices of the time. Needless to say, that puts drought tolerance as an issue that’s top of mind for producers not just in Indiana, but here as well because as we all know, Indiana producers woes could just as easily be our own. In some cases, they were.
At this years Southwest Agricultural Conference, Purdue University’s Tony Vyn spoke to producers about some of the reasons behind those poorer than expected yields and offered some advice on management practices that can help give hybrid corn every advantage to perform in adverse conditions.
