Corn School: Improve Timing & Bump Yield With Split Application Nitrogen

In this episode of the Corn School, Bernard Tobin and OMAF Corn Lead Greg Stewart turn to a chalkboard to draw up some nitrogen strategies for the 2014 corn crop.

Throughout the winter meeting season, Stewart touted a split application approach to nitrogen. He recommends growers put down 100 lb of nitrogen pre-plant and then wait for a signal from Mother Nature to determine how much nitrogen should be applied as a side-dress. Depending on weather, growing conditions and yield expectations, Stewart shares strategies that call for no additional nitrogen — 50 lb, or up to 70 and even 80 lb.

Stewart also shares tips on the role rotation plays in nitrogen rates, side-dress timing and whether you can get bang for your buck when applying late-season nitrogen in waist- or chest-high corn.
