Talking about strip tillage in corn is easy, but making it work in the field can be challenging.
In this episode of Corn School, resident agronomist Peter Johnson sets out to find the perfect strip till berm at the recent Elgin Soil and Crop Improvement Association field demonstration day.
Johnson explains that planting into 6″x6″ tilled strips can reduce soil erosion and improve phosphorus management, but growers don’t want to give up yield in the process.
At the Elgin demonstration, Johnson watches five strip till machines in action and offers management tips. He shares dos and don’ts when running a range of coulter and shank-based strip till units.
“There are lot of different ideas,” notes Johnson. “It’s often the nut behind the wheel that makes the difference. Any of these strip tillers can do a great job if you set them up right.
“Everybody will have a different opinion of what is the perfect berm. But somehow we have to figure it out and make it work. Go strip till!”
