While fungicide resistance evolves similarly to herbicide resistance, it can be more challenging to assess given the patchy nature of disease infection across a field, the decreased incidence of disease in dry years, and the multiple lifecycles some pulse diseases complete in a year.
Bethany Wyatt, senior technical service specialist with BASF, says that Group 11 resistance is not new, as resistant ascochyta in chickpeas and anthracnose in lentils were confirmed in the early 2000s, and resistant mycosphaerella blight of peas was confirmed in 2008.
In the last few years, the drought cycle has put the brakes on many of the common pulse diseases, but with the return of moisture for much of the pulse-growing region, disease management will likely be top of mind this season.
Farmers will need to be able to assess if the diseases they are dealing with are Group 11 resistant and how to manage these pathogens using longer crop rotations, and rotating modes of action, especially if applying more than once in a season, and using multiple modes of effective action in a tank mix.
