When it comes to planting no-till wheat, Phil Needham, of Needham Ag Technologies, says farmers need to think first about the combine before rolling out the drill.
“You can buy the best piece of seeding equipment on the market, but it’s only going to be as good as the residue management (in a no-till system) on the combine,” Needham recently told growers at a series of no-till drill clinics sponsored by C & M Seeds and Devolder Farms.
In this Wheat School video, Needham guides growers through a John Deere S670 combine and stresses the importance of knowing the machine’s residue management system and how to make adjustments to ensure optimum spread patterns for different harvest conditions and combine header size.
Key things to consider include keeping residue knives sharp; knowing how to properly adjust discharge vanes that help direct residue and ensure even distribution; and understanding the role tailboard deflector fins play in spreading the residue.
