Just when you think you’re getting somewhere on disease management, the disease population shifts just enough to stay competitive. Fusarium, with its many strains and staying power on residue, is a constant thorn in the side of many Manitoba farmers, but it’s also increasingly an issue for Alberta and Saskatchewan farmers as well. What’s more, fusarium graminearum, the truly nasty strain in the fusarium family, is actually becoming more virulent, that is that infection of the disease now creates even more toxin (DON) from infection than it used to.
Dr. Kelly Turkington, research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, outlines the lastest on fusarium risk in Western Canada in this Wheat School episode. He offers some key tips for management, as well as sage advice on thinking big-picture with this crop disease. Turkington also sheds light on the one common misconception many farmers still have about fusarium infection and spread.
