Ontario farmers rarely see the yield monitor hit 240 bushels in their wheat crop. But Barry and Tyler McBlain hit that number in 2016.
What’s even more amazing is that it happened on the tough clay soils southeast of Brantford in Brant County. In this episode of “Real Wheat Farmers”, agronomist Peter Johnson talks with the father and son to learn how they hit these huge yield numbers on their farm.

Barry explains the farm has not always been this productive but a long-term commitment to soil testing, a strong fertility program including lots of lime, crop rotation and cover crops is paying dividends. Tyler stresses they can’t cut corners if they want to reach their farm average yield goal of 160 bushels per acre. To get there, Tyler says they’ll continue to intensively manage the crop and pay attention to every detail – from weed control, seeding rate and planting depth to fertility and fungicides.
