Peter Johnson is back with another episode in our ‘Real’ Wheat Farmers series.
This time our RealAgriculture’s resident agronomist is gleaning management tips from Hugh Dietrich who farms with his family at Lucan, Ontario.
Dietrich’s advice for Johnson starts with the need to put phosphorus down with wheat in the fall. Tile drainage is also a must. Dietrich has a simple philosophy for determining tile spacing: “We put them as close as we can afford,” he says. Depending on the farm, spacing can range from 22.5 to 30 ft. Split nitrogen is also a key management strategy. Average application rate is 135 lb; 90 lb goes down as early as possible with the balance being applied at early flag leaf. Dietrich notes that check strips play a key role in determining second application timing.
In the video, Dietrich discusses his three-fungicide application philosophy and why it’s important to do a good job when applying monoammonium phosphate (MAP). “If you can’t do it, find someone who can,” he says. Johnson is also smitten with Dietrich’s Amazone fertilizer spreader and concludes that real wheat growers who want to a good job with dry fertilizer need a good spreader.
