Wheat School: Searching for a silver bullet against resistant weeds

by

With herbicide resistance on the rise, the need for more tools in the toolbox is higher than it has ever been, because as Dr. Breanne Tidemann of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada says, there are no magic bullets.

While any single management strategy is unlikely to be the final solution to herbicide resistance and weeds generally, using more than one effective mode of action is going to achieve a higher level of success, says Tidemann in this episode of RealAgriculture’s Wheat School. She adds that there are other tactics out there, but they do take time, effort, and money to start incorporating them.

Some techniques for dealing with weeds, such as increasing seeding rate, can be more profitable for growers that are currently spending a lot on chemicals to control weeds such as wild oats. Increasing seeding rates can potentially give higher yields, help control weeds, and ensure that the herbicides used are effective for a longer time.

To quote the War Against Weeds podcast, silver bullets are for werewolves, not weeds, Tidemann says.
