Coming out of the winter months, making sure that your winter wheat has an adequate amount of nitrogen is critical for achieving your yield objectives. Making some nitrogen decision in the spring is critical and cannot be ignored by the grower.
Based on where you farm, how you approach the topic will differ. Because of this I have filmed two video to ensure you get the right information. If you watch both videos you will immediately notice some of the differences in how winter wheat is managed between the west and Ontario. For example, did you know that winter wheat growers in Ontario do not soil sample for nitrogen in the spring and apply regardless.
Ross McKenzie is a Agronomy Research Scientist at the Lethbridge Research Station and Peter Johnson is the Wheat Specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. I asked Ross to give advice for the west and Peter to talk about Ontario.
