Regardless of the disease pressure mix on your farm, maintaining a disease-free flag and penultimate leaf is a key means of ensuring max wheat yield. Early season leaf disease can seem benign enough, but in the right conditions diseases like tan spot and septoria can move up through the canopy quickly and eventually begin compromising the flag and penultimate leaves.
In this Wheat School episode, Richard Marsh, cereal field crop specialist with Syngenta Crop Protection, explains why early season scouting is so very important, especially if Mother Nature keeps sending showers through, and offers advice on whether a fungicide application at herbicide timing is the right move, or if you should wait. In this video, Marsh suggests farmers think about their season-long strategy (will you only target a fusarium application? Or only target the flag leaf?), and consider environmental conditions and variety susceptibility when planning a fungicide application.
