Wheat School: Understanding Those Higher Yields in Your Fields

by

Every wheat farmer has watched with glee as the number on their yield monitor jumps 20 to 50 bushels as the combine travels through the field.

In this episode of Real Agriculture Wheat School, agronomist Phil Needham of Needham AG Technologies offers advice on how farmers can drill down through yield maps and soil tests to help understand what’s generating those higher yield areas and push field averages higher. Needham shared these insights with growers attending the recent Southwest Agricultural Conference, held last week at the University of Guelph’s Ridgetown campus.

“You really have to look at those maps in more detail. Is it a pH problem? Maybe it’s a drainage problem or it needs more phosphate?” There are many factors that could be stealing yield, says Needham, who notes that growers need to look at a host of issues ranging from seedbed preparation and uniformity to row spacing and fertility.
